Is It Possible To Be A Work At Home Mom And Benefit My Children Too?
Jan 21st, 2009 | By Tiffany | Category: Successful Living
Being a work at home mom wasn’t in my “crystal ball” when I began college to obtain a degree in Business Administration at the age of 18.
Really, I barely had a clue as to what I wanted to do with my life.
In the back of my mind I was always interested in working online. It wasn’t until working at Sonic in my home town for three years during high school and being promoted to shift manager that I realized I wanted to work doing something (wasn’t sure of what) in the business field.
One semester in college an epiphany occurred during a career building course I was taking. The book read for that course is what caused that epiphany to occur (as well as my having children).
The book focused on helping assess your skills and competencies. Then it showed you how to group them all together to get an idea of what fit you best as a career.
At a point in my life where I had just birthed my third child and was no closer to knowing what I wanted to do in life than when I was 18, it was really important for me to know what I would be doing career wise so that I could live a happy life.
Spending the rest of my life doing something I would hate, regret, or have to learn to deal/cope with wasn’t in my “crystal ball” neither.
After completing the career building course which consisted of reading a helpful and enlightening, easy to read book: What Color Is Your Parachute?: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers , I had way more clarity on what it was I wanted to do with my life.
The various charts in the book, the tips, and the stories made determining something you may spend your whole life trying to figure out, really easy to do.
Then I decided to do something I thought I would NEVER think to do after that course and semester.
I made the decision to not continue with college but instead educate myself no matter how long or rigorous it would be on doing what I love to do and also have the skills and competencies to do which is build my own business online.
Using the internet to build a business and work at home in the process fit perfectly into what I wanted to have as a career and more importantly meshed well with raising a family.
Reading What Color Is Your Parachute?: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers during that course caused me to realize that I can do what I had always dreamed of doing, and even better, made me realize that the time to do so would be now… not later.
Today I’m focused and actively working on building a business online so that I can do what I love to do which is nurture and help you be successful at being a work at home mom, while being there for and with your children.
If you have decided to be a stay at home mom and you really want to turn that position into a mom earning an income from home, then being there for your children, teaching them, not missing out on the little or the big things, nurturing, loving, and enjoying them is a huge motivating factor to keep pressing on.
My decision to be a work at home mom was made partly off the fact that I had children and I wanted to spend my days with them as opposed to being away. And partly because I wanted to ensure I was giving them a head start in life by teaching and preparing them for whatever they may face in the future.
Admittedly I am guilty of sometimes pushing them off on a movie, having them wait until I finish work online or with the chores before playing or even teaching them anything. All things I am ashamed of but more importantly more driven to change.
After watching a 2 year old genius I am truly inspired. His guardians are making sure they take out what little time they do have, to teach him and teach him well.
When I saw this video I was reminded of three things:
- how much more I could be teaching my children,
- how children are the most important ones in any situation, and
- how being a work at home mom would give the time needed to take advantage of my children future.
Is it possible to be a work at home mom and benefit your children at the same time?
